Goldenseal Network Troubleshooting

I'm having problems networking Goldenseal!

This page is an overall troubleshooting directory for all possible networking problems that might occur with Goldenseal multi-user small business software.

Check the different types of possible problems below:

Can't Sign On As Client

Client Hangs up After Connecting

This is usually caused by the firewall blocking the Goldenseal connection.

Server Won't Run As Server

Did you just set up a server machine? You need to restart Goldenseal before it will run as a server.

If that's not it, choose Preferences from the Options menu on the server machine, and choose Network from the submenu. Check the File User Type popup field-- if it is Server, the server is running properly. If it is something else, you'll need to reset it to be a server, then restart Goldenseal.

Can't Sign On over a VPN

Getting "Server Is Busy" Messages On Client

Click here for a Server is Busy troubleshooting list.

Check the server machine. If it is showing an error message, click OK to the message. You may need to restart the server copy of Goldenseal.

HINT-- Please let us know if you see any Oops messages in Goldenseal! Tell us the message, including the file name and line number at the bottom. It will help us to make Goldenseal more reliable!

If you have many clients or if the server is in a remote location, follow these steps to prevent it from showing error messages and "hanging up" the clients:

  1. Choose Preferences from the Options menu on the server machine, and choose Network from the submenu.
  2. Turn off the Allow Data Entry in Server checkbox.
  3. Click OK.

Network is Always Slow

Try the following checklist:

  1. What Ethernet speed do your computers have? Older 10T machines may be a little sluggish.
  2. What speed does your router support?
  3. Try disconnecting machines and running just a 2-computer network.
  4. Try swapping cables, since one may be defective.
  5. Try running with a different router, since it may be defective.
  6. If a wireless network-- is there physical interference that would slow down the network?

Network is Sometimes Slow

Try the following checklist:

  1. Disconnect your Internet connection-- does that help? If so, there is probably heavy Internet traffic in your local network (e.g. large downloads, or some of your computer acting as "spam zombies")
  2. Try disconnecting machines and running just a 2-computer network. Does that help?
  3. Try swapping cables, since one may be defective.
  4. Try running with a different router, since it may be defective.
  5. If a wireless network-- is there intermittent physical interference that would slow down the network?
