Which Estimator to Use

NOTE-- In 2000 we completely replaced MacNail with the newer Goldenseal construction estimating software. There are still die-hard MacNail users, so we keep the manuals online for their use! Goldenseal is an integrated program that also includes accounting, job costing and contract writing features. It comes with several construction estimating templates, which are similar to the stock Estimators that came with MacNail.

Which Construction Estimator File to Use

The MacNail construction estimator software includes six specialized estimators. You can use any one of them to start an estimate--it will depend on the size and scope of the project, and on how detailed a breakdown you would like to see. See page 58 for more details about the Estimators.

Four of the estimators are able to import projects from the Hyper*Estimator and Hyper*Remodeler.
* MacNail Estimator is the most complete estimator, with a list of about 1000 items.
* CSI Estimator breaks each project into the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) divisions.
* Short MacNail and Short CSI Estimators use only the main categories from the MacNail or CSI Estimators, with no subdivisions. Use them for smaller projects, or for projects that don 't require a detailed breakdown.

Two of the estimators contain no pre-entered items or prices, and cannot import projects from the Hyper-*Estimators.
* Quickie MacNail and Quickie CSI Estimators are arranged in the same categories as the MacNail or CSI Estimators. Use the Quickie estimators for very small jobs or for jobs that will be almost entirely subcontracted. You can also use them as a starting point for your own custom estimators.

NOTE: Other specialized Estimators may be shipping. Check your disks for additional estimators.
