New Assemblies

NOTE-- We retired the MacNail estimating program in 2000, and replaced it with Goldenseal construction estimating software. There are still a significant number of die-hard MacNail users, so we keep the manuals online for them! Goldenseal is an integrated program that also includes accounting, scheduling and contract writing. It also has assemblies, but in a record format that is much easier to understand!

To set up a new assembly:

1. Click on the row where you'd like to add the new item, drag the mouse down through the number of new rows you'd like to add, then choose Add Rows Here from the Edit menu.
NOTE: Before adding rows, you may want to choose Sort Special from the Data menu, and sort by item codes. That way it's easier to see if you already have items under the assembly code number you are adding.
2. Type the item's item code number into the first column. This same code number will appear in the code column of an Estimator or Price Master in the MacNail construction management software. Make sure that the new code number is not already being used by some other construction item!
EXAMPLE: We'll create a three-item assembly for 16" on center 2x4 wall framing, with a code number of 467.
3. Enter a material name into the second column. If you are working on the MacNail Assemblies file, this name must match an item in the MacNail Price Sheet. If you are working on some other Assemblies file, the material name must match an item in the corresponding Price Sheet file.
HINT: To be absolutely sure the name matches, click on the material name cell in the Price Sheet, choose Copy from the Edit menu, click on the material used cell in the Assembly sheet, then choose Paste from the Edit menu.

4. Type the appropriate material quantity into the third column. You can base this quantity on theoretical calculations, or on actual experience.
EXAMPLE: since our studs are 16" on center, we calculate that we'll need 3 studs for every 4 feet of wall or 3/4 of a stud per foot. So we type in .75 (studs per foot of wall) for our first material in the example.
5. Type a waste percentage in the fourth column.
6. For each additional component in the assembly, repeat steps 2 to 5. Each will have the same item code, but a different material (see next page).
