Saltbox Roof

Problem

entering a saltbox roof into BidMagic roofing estimating software
salt box roof- different slopes on gable roof, or gable not centered

Diagnosis

A 'saltbox' roof is like a gable roof, but the gable is off-center. Eave heights are different, front and back. The two parts may have different pitches.

Solution

Enter as a gable roof.
If pitches are different, use the average between them. This will give roof area that is pretty close to the real thing. Can use a weighted average (based on area on each side) if it's very uneven.
For eave height, use the average between the two eave heights. This will give siding and gable end area that's pretty close to the real thing.

Comments

Another alternative, especially if there is a big difference between eave heights:
1. Enter as a gable roof.
2. Use average roof slope, if necessary
3. Enter higher eave height as the eave height.
4. This will give too much gable end area. The area to subtract is approximately building width (perpendicular to ridge) * height difference between high eave and low eave. This covers the reduction of area on BOTH sides of the building.
