Estimating Small Projects

NOTE-- We retired the BidMagic construction estimating software in 2001. It has been replaced by Goldenseal construction estimating software.

We still include this BidMagic estimating software manual as a convenience for users of our older program. Many features are similar, in Goldenseal estimating.

Dimensioning Small Projects

When you are using the BidMagic construction estimating software for a small project, you don't need to spend as much time on the project dimensions as you would for a larger project.

When starting a small construction project bid, first choose Clear Dimensions from the Bid menu, then choose Clear Specifications from the Bid menu. This will make sure that you don't surprise yourself with work left over from a previous project.

As you go through Dimensions on a small project, you only need to enter those construction dimensions that apply to your project.

For example, in a small bathroom remodeling project, you can treat Dimensions as follows:

  • Dimensions directory--enter construction type (Remodeling), project cost, longest length, longest width, number of units, number of rooms.
  • Room card--enter all items.
  • Foundation Dimensions--skip entirely.
  • Roof Dimensions--skip entirely.
  • Structural Dimensions--enter quantities for new framing (if any), and skip everything else.
  • Exterior Dimensions--enter trash volume and skip everything else.
  • Miscellaneous Dimensions--enter doors and windows (if applicable), baseboard dimensions, and number of interior corners. Skip everything else.
  • Finish Dimensions--check the calculated quantities for interior walls, wallboard, finished floors, paint and insulation, and change if needed.
