Estimating Multi-Unit Construction

NOTE-- We retired the BidMagic construction estimating software in 2001. It has been replaced by Goldenseal construction estimating software.

We still include this BidMagic estimating software manual as a convenience for users of our older program. Many features are similar, in Goldenseal estimating.

Multi-Unit Construction Estimating-- Mixed Units

You can use the BidMagic estimating software to handle multiple unit construction projects.

If a multi-unit construction project contains a mixture of a few different types of units, follow these steps:

  1. Create a separate estimate for each type of unit.
  2. Create another estimate for overall project costs such as roads, project utilities and street lighting.
  3. For each estimate, choose Export Bottom Line from the Data menu.
  4. Open each estimate with a spreadsheet program, and use it to assemble the overall project cost from each of the smaller estimates. Multiply the cost of each type of unit by the number of units of that type, and add together the total for each type, plus the total for project costs from step 2.

If the project contains many different units (or if you want BidMagic to create the whole bid itself), follow these steps:

  1. Enter the entire project into a single BidMagic estimate.
  2. For most measurements, enter the total amount for all structures in the entire project.
  3. For bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens on the Basic Dimensions card, enter the total number of each type of room in the entire project.
  4. For other rooms on the Basic Dimensions card, click the check boxes to describe the setup of the 'average' unit.
  5. Lock the total number of rooms field, and the number of rooms in the entire project will be calculated for you. Unlock it, and adjust it if necessary.
  6. For all other measurements, use the grand total for all buildings in the entire project.
