Estimating Complex Roofs

NOTE-- We retired the BidMagic construction estimating software in 2001. It has been replaced by Goldenseal construction estimating software.

We still include this BidMagic estimating software manual as a convenience for users of our older program. Many features are similar, in Goldenseal estimating.

Entering Complex Roofs

The BidMagic roofing estimating software includes a section where you can enter each part of a complex roof, so it is easier to calculate roofing construction dimensions.

If you choose Complex Roof, you'll be shown an Edit Complex Roof button, plus the horizontal area under complex roofs, and the amount of roof still unallocated.

Click the Edit Complex Roof button to go to a Complex Roof card where you can enter specific information about the different roofs on the project.

The Complex Roof card allows you to break the project into as many as eight separate roofs.

HINT: If there are roofs already on the Complex Roof card before you begin, choose Clear Card from the Bid menu to erase them.

Enter the following information about each section of the project that is under a different roof:

  • Roof type-- Click on the roof type that most nearly matches the section of roof (see pages 205-206).
  • Length-- Enter the longest length of the portion of the building under the selected roof (see page 173).
  • Width-- Enter the widest width of the portion of the building under the selected roof (see page 173).
  • Area-- If the area field is locked, the amount of horizontal floor area that is covered by the roof will be computed, based on a rectangular shape (length x width). Unlock the area field to enter your own number. NOTE: BidMagic will compute the actual roofing area for you, using the slope and overhang figures.
  • Overhang/Parapet-- Click the cycle button to determine whether the roof will have an overhang or a raised parapet .

Also enter the average horizontal overhang or vertical parapet height (see page 211).

  • Slopes-- Enter the roof slope(s), measured in inches of vertical rise per foot of horizontal run or in degrees, depending on the roof type (see pages 209-210).
  • Roof Height-- for a gambrel or mansard roof, enter the height of the slope change. For an arch or dome roof, enter the total height of the roof (see page 211).
  • Gables-- for a gambrel, gable or arch roof, enter the number of gable ends under the roof (see pages 212-213).

As you enter each roof, the area still remaining in the project will be displayed at top center. When it is zero, you'll know that you have accounted for all roofs.

When all complex roof components are entered, click on the Roof Card button at upper right to return to the Roof Card. If you need to return to the Complex Roof card, click the Edit Complex Roof button again.
