Estimating Closets, Shelving and Attics

NOTE-- We retired the BidMagic construction estimating software in 2001. It has been replaced by Goldenseal construction estimating software.

We still include this BidMagic estimating software manual as a convenience for users of our older program. Many features are similar, in Goldenseal estimating.

The BidMagic construction estimating software includes dimensions for closets, shelving, attics and other trim details.

Closets and Shelving

Enter the total number of closets that will be installed, or given new shelving.

  • Consider any storage space that generally includes shelving to be a closet.
  • A closet that has two doors should still be considered as one closet.
  • If you have a bank of small storage areas separated by walls, then consider each one separately as an individual closet.

BidMagic includes unit prices for standard shelving quantities in bedroom and linen closets. If you will be installing additional shelving, enter its total lineal footage.

NOTE: You'll enter the actual type of shelving in Specifications, on the Interior Trim card.

Stairways

Enter the total number of stairways that will be worked on--including the basement stairs. Generally you will have just one stairway between each adjacent floor.

NOTE: Stairways with a landing between two or more flights of stairs should still be treated as one stairway.

Also enter the total floor area taken up by stairways. In the case of a stairway going from the first floor to the second floor, subtract both the area taken up by the stairway on the first floor, plus the 'gap' in the second floor above the stairs. In the case of a basement stairway, include the basement area only if you have a finished basement.

Attic Floor Area

Enter the total square footage of attic flooring. Attics are considered to be any above-ground storage area that is mostly or entirely unfinished, except for a rough floor. Attics are usually above the other floors, above the garage, or under the eaves.

NOTE: If a space is mostly or completely finished, do not include it in the attic area--consider it a regular part of the project instead, and include it on the Basic Dimensions or Room cards.
Do not include the space on top of truss rafters or ceiling joists as a part of the attic, unless it has an actual floor installed on it and will be used for storage.
