Estimates

NOTE-- In 2000 we retired MacNail and BidMagic (our earlier estimating programs), and replaced them with Goldenseal construction estimating software. There are still die-hard MacNail users, for whom we keep the manuals online. Goldenseal also includes accounting, job costing and project management. Rather than storing each estimate as a separate file, Goldenseal instead keeps them as database records, in a single file.

Estimates

An estimate includes pricing for one specific project.

To start a new estimate for a current project in the MacNail construction estimating software:
1. Choose *New Estimate from the FILE menu.
2. Click New Estimate.
3. Choose (from the scrolling list) an estimator to use as a source.
4. Type in a project name.
5. Click OK.

To open an existing estimate in the MacNail construction estimating software:
1. Choose *Open Estimate from the FILE menu.
2. Choose an estimate from the scrolling list.
3. Click OK.

For advanced Users: You can also start a new estimate by using the Finder from the 'desktop'. It is actually a little quicker than using the MacNail menus.
To start a new estimate using the Finder:
1. Open the Estimating blanks folder, and click once on the estimator file you will use as a source.
2. Choose Duplicate from the FILE menu.
3. A new file named 'Copy of...' will be created. Type in a new name, using the project name and the word 'estimate'. For example, you might call the file Smith Estimate.
4. Drag the new estimate out of the folder, and stash it elsewhere on the desktop temporarily.
5. Close the Estimating blanks folder, and open the Current estimates folder.
6. Drag the new estimate into the Current estimates folder.
7. Double-click on Estimating Manager or on MacNail Manager, and use *Open Estimate from the FILE menu to open the new estimate.
