Using Customizing Commands

NOTE-- We retired the MacNail estimating program in 2000, and replaced it with Goldenseal construction estimating software. There are still a significant number of die-hard MacNail users, so we keep the manuals online for them! Goldenseal is an integrated program that also includes accounting, scheduling and contract writing features. It does not require Excel, and runs very quickly.

Speeding up Customizing

A few of the MacNail Customizing operations can go very slowly-- they have very large quantities of information to transfer between worksheets, and may take an hour or more to run.

To maximize speed in the MacNail construction management software:
* Make sure you are using enough RAM! If Excel is short of memory, it can slow down drastically. Depending on your computer, Excel version and the task you are doing, you may need to assign Excel anywhere from 1500K to 5000K. If your hard disk light is flashing continuously or you hear it going all the time, you should assign Excel more RAM. To do so: Quit from Excel, then look for the Excel application icon in the Finder. Click once on the icon, choose Get Info from the File menu, then type a larger number into the memory allocation at lower right.
* Close unnecessary files.
* Consider a faster Macintosh! All computer operations, not just MacNail, will be speeded up greatly. The newer Macs with an 68030 chip are three to six times faster than the older Mac Plus, Mac SE and Mac Classic.
When running lengthy macros:macros, lengthy
* If you use a screen saver, disable it or set it to more than 60 minutes delay, so it won't come on in the middle of the operation. Most screen savers cause no problems, but some may interfere with Excel's actions.
* If you use alarm or reminder program, make sure that you don't have any messages that will come up while the macro is running. If your alarm program allows you to tell it which programs not to interrupt, include Excel in the list.
