Entering State Payroll Taxes

How do I fill in state payroll taxes?

Goldenseal payroll software includes basic tax tables for every US state and Canadian province. You can download them for free each year, and import them into your company file.

You can also add tax items for union dues, local taxes and unemployment taxes (which usually have a different rate for each business).

Adding State/Provincial Tax Tables

We include the current year's tax table on the program CD when you purchase Goldenseal. To install tax tables for your US state or Canadian province, follow these steps:

  1. Open your company file.
  2. Choose Import from the File menu, and choose Payroll Update from the submenu.
  3. "Navigate" to the Payroll Files folder, open the US Payroll or Canadian Payroll folder, and choose the payroll file for your state. Click OK.
  4. Goldenseal payroll software will install the tax tables.
  5. To see the new tables, choose Payroll Setup from the Costs menu and choose Tax Tables from the submenu.
  6. To check the payee accounts, choose Payroll Setup from the Costs menu and choose Tax Items from the submenu. You may need to change the Pay To account if you use a different account for tax agency payments

We also post current tax tables on the website, available for free download. To switch to the current tax tables at the beginning of a new year, import the new tax tables from our website.

Adding Local Taxes

To adjust state unemployment tax, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Payroll Setup from the Costs menu, and choose Tax Items from the submenu.
  2. Double-click on the state unemployment tax.
  3. Type in your percentage rate and the current wage cutoff amount.
  4. Click OK.

To add a local tax, union dues, or other withholding, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Payroll Setup from the Costs menu, and choose Tax Items from the submenu.
  2. Click the New button.
  3. Type in information about the tax.
  4. Click OK
