NOTE-- We retired the BidMagic construction estimating
software in 2001. It has been replaced by Goldenseal construction
estimating software.
We still include this BidMagic estimating software manual
as a convenience for users of our older program. Many features are similar, in Goldenseal estimating.

Horizontal Roofing Areas
The BidMagic construction estimating software starts roofing calculations with the horizontal
area under the roofing (a number that is easy to measure from the floor plans).
These two fields show the horizontal area that will be covered by new roofing materials,
and new roof framing. Each number is a horizontal area (measurable off the floor plans), ignoring
slope and overhang. If you lock these fields, BidMagic will calculate their area, based on the quantities you
entered on previous
cards. The calculated area will nearly always be correct, except for the following situations:
- No roof work
will be assumed for Gut/Rehab projects. If there is reframing or reroofing work to
be done on the roof, add the horizontal areas by hand.
- No work on the existing roof is assumed for Additions or
Remodeling projects. If you need to replace or reframe part of the roof over the
existing building, add it in by hand.
Page 204 Project Dimensions
- A combination of a cantilever (upper floor hanging over the lower floor) and
a setback (lower floor not covered by upper floor) will result in too little roof area being
computed. Add in whichever of the two areas is
smaller. NOTE: If the building has only setbacks or only cantilevers, BidMagic should still compute the roof
area correctly.
- A project where you plan to add one or more new dormers to an existing roof, and do no work
on the main roof itself.
When that is the case, enter zero for the horizontal area under new roof.
Choose a roof
type that
matches the existing roof, and enter information about the main roof and the dormers as usual.
If you want
to change any of the calculated horizontal areas, unlock the quantity and enter your own
number.
