Estimating Gable Roofs

NOTE-- We retired the BidMagic construction estimating software in 2001. It has been replaced by Goldenseal construction estimating software.

We still include this BidMagic estimating software manual as a convenience for users of our older program. Many features are similar, in Goldenseal estimating.

The BidMagic roofing cost estimating software includes fields for estimating gable roofs, including extra gables.

Estimating Gables

Enter the number of gable ends that are a part of the roof construction in this project. You may add gables to any roof except a flat roof or a complex roof (which handles them instead on the complex roof card, see page 208).

A gable, gambrel or arch roof normally has two main gables in new construction, and either one or two main gables in an addition. In some cases it may have additional side gables, usually at right angles to the two main gables.

NOTE: If a gable end is completely surrounded by roofing, consider it a dormer. If its face is continuous with the main wall of the house, consider it an extra gable.

A hip, mansard or dome roof normally has no gable ends. However they may be added when a gable end is added to a hip or mansard roof (see illustration, page 214).

The two gable fields allow you to have different gable widths. The field on the right is used for the first and third gables in the project, while the field on the left is used for the second gable, and all other gables after the third.

  1. If the project has one gable-- enter its width into the main gable field on the right.
  2. If the project has two gables-- enter the width of one into the main gable field on the right, and the width of the other into the side gable field on the left.
  3. If the project has three gables-- enter the width of the two main gables into the field on the right, and the width of the remaining side gable into the field on the left.
  4. If the project has four gables or more-- enter the width of the two main gables into the field on the right, and the width of the other side gables into the field on the left.

NOTE: If the project includes more than two gable widths, use a weighted average in one or both of the fields.
