Estimating Dormers

NOTE-- We retired the BidMagic construction estimating software in 2001. It has been replaced by Goldenseal construction estimating software.

We still include this BidMagic estimating software manual as a convenience for users of our older program. Many features are similar, in Goldenseal estimating.

The BidMagic construction estimating software lets you enter dormer measurements for your roofing estimates.

Dormers

A dormer is any smaller roof 'cut through' and completely surrounded by the main roof. It will consist of an outer wall, two triangular side walls, and a roof. If your project contains any new dormers, enter their quantity into the Dormers field. Otherwise enter a zero.

Also enter the following information about the dormer(s):

  • Type of roof-- Choose a shed, gable or hip roof.
  • Slope-- Enter the slope used on the dormer roof. NOTE: If you have several dormers of different types, enter dimensions that match either the largest number of dormers, or an 'average' for all the dormers.
  • Height-- Enter the height of the dormer. Measure from the point where the siding stops under the dormer's eaves, down to the lowest point where the dormer meets the main roof.
  • Width-- Enter the width of the dormer, measured at right angles to the slope of the main roof.

If you have no horizontal area under new roofing, the entire roof area of any dormers will be added to the total roof area. Otherwise dormers will be assumed to be in the new roofing, and may add or subtract from the total roof area depending on their slope and overhang.

NOTE: If you are both adding new roofing and adding a dormer to an existing roof, unlock the roof area field and add the roof area that is over the new dormer itself. The area of its overhangs is already included in the calculations, so you don't need to add that in again.
