Estimating Tough Details

NOTE-- We retired the BidMagic construction estimating software in 2001. It has been replaced by Goldenseal construction estimating software.

We still include this BidMagic estimating software manual as a convenience for users of our older program. Many features are similar, in Goldenseal estimating.

Some construction details require special handling in the BidMagic estimating software, to get the greatest accuracy. This section will cover such details.

Estimating Weird & Tough Details

Almost every project has something that is out of the ordinary--some seem to be nothing but weird items! There are several ways to handle estimating of weird and tough details, depending on how likely you are to see them again.

Estimating One of a Kind Costs--Entered Directly

For items that you probably won't ever use again, use the 'other' choice in Specifications. For example, to enter the cost of a batch of custom shelving:

  1. First compute (or guess) the labor cost for the item. You might figure 12 hours of skilled labor @$25 an hour, for a total labor cost of $300.
  2. Next, compute the material cost for the item. You might figure 40 board feet of oak at $5 a board foot, plus $20 for hardware, for a total material cost of $220 --plus 8% waste for a total price of about $240.
  3. Go to the Specifications card that best describes the item --in this case, Interior Trim.
  4. Click on the pop-up button next to a blank item in the subcategory that best describes the item--in this case, either Shelving or Other Interior Trim. Choose Other from the menu.
  5. Type in a brief description for the unusual item, along with the overall computed price of $540.

NOTE: When computing the price for an unusual item, only include 'hard' construction costs and a waste factor. Overhead, profit and other soft costs are covered automatically in the Bottom Line.
