Using Excel Macros

NOTE-- In 2000 we retired MacNail, and replaced it with Goldenseal construction software. Like MacNail, it is designed for builders, remodelers and other small businesses. Goldenseal is a complete small business solution that handles accounting, construction estimating, and project management, plus simple project scheduling. You don't need Excel to run Goldenseal, and it usually runs much faster than MacNail.

Scheduling Macro Basics

The MacNail project management software uses several complex macros to move information between different scheduling worksheets. A few of these operations can take a while-- approximate times are listed for each menu command, later in this chapter.

When running lengthy macros:.

* If you use a screen saver, make sure that you have disabled it or set it to greater than 30 minutes delay, so it won't come on in the middle of the operation.
* If you use Smart Alarms or other "interrupters", make sure that you don't have any messages that will come up while the macro is running.
* If using MultiFinder, it is best not to switch to another program while the macro is running. Unpredictable results can sometimes occur.

A few hints when using lengthy macros:

* Save all worksheets before beginning the macro.
* Close all unnecessary documents before starting the macro. If memory gets tight, operations may slow down drastically-- or you may be halted completely.
* Run lengthy macros when you don't need to use the computer for a while. We have planned MacNail so you can enter data and look at reports and files very quickly. Only a few "posting" processes take time.

* Consider one of the faster Macs! All computer operations, not just the MacNail construction scheduling software, will be speeded up enormously. The Mac IIs and SE/30 are at least four times as fast as the Mac Plus, Classic or SE.

To interrupt a macro:

1. Hold down the command (cloverleaf) key and type a period several times.
2. A warning box will appear. Choose Halt (see page 147).
3. For best results, close all files and do not save changes.
