NOTE--
We retired the MacNail estimating program in 2000, and
replaced it with Goldenseal construction
estimating software. There are still a significant number of die-hard
MacNail users, so we keep the manuals online for them!
Goldenseal is an integrated
program that also includes accounting, scheduling
and contract writing. It's very easy to create new material items or
construction assemblies, in Goldenseal.
To create a new unit price 'on the fly' in
an estimator file from the MacNail construction estimating
software, add a row or several rows in Specifications, and type in detailed information about
the new item. See page 49 for detailed instructions on creating a new line item.
To create a new unit price in a Price Master file,
follow these steps:
1. Select the row where you'd like to add the new item or items, then drag the mouse down through the number
of rows you'd like to add.
2. Choose Add Rows Here from the Edit menu.
3. Type in an item name and a code number.
WARNING: The code number should be different from all other code numbers in the Price Master. To make it
easier to avoid duplicates, choose Sort Special from the Data menu, and sort by 'code' before you add rows.
4. Type in unit prices for the item: skilled hours per unit, unskilled hours per unit, and a material cost
per unit (see pages 77-79).
5. Type in a unit size such as sf (square feet) or each.
6. Type in the cost category under which you'd like to include the new item. Cost categories consist
of a number or text for a main category, then a period, then the subcategory number (always using two digits).
7. If you'd like to use a formula in the 'suggested' column, type it into the suggested
column of the Price Master. Use a # (pound sign) instead of an = (equal sign) at the beginning of the formula.

8. Type in the skilled wage rate you'd like to use. This wage rate should be listed in the Fixed Costs
portion of your estimators.
9. If you'd like to use labor and/or material formula modifiers, type them into the next columns to
the right (see page 116).
After you've typed a new unit price item into a Price Master, you can use
the Move Prices command to move it to your estimating worksheets (see page 221).
To have the MacNail construction management
software calculate
material costs based on material supplier prices, you'll need to create a
material assembly for the new item (see page 117). The new item assemblies can also be used to make material
takeoffs in MacNail Scheduling (see page 122).
