Comparison Estimates

NOTE-- We retired the MacNail and BidMagic estimating programs in 2000, and replaced them with Goldenseal construction estimating software. Goldenseal is an integrated program that also includes accounting, scheduling and contract writing. We keep these instructions online for our die-hard BidMagic and MacNail users! You'll use comparison estimates to calibrate Goldenseal, similar to the process described here.

Step 2-- Make a Comparison Estimate

Once you've decided on one or more projects to use, make a detailed estimate for each of them, using the estimator that you want to calibrate.

Take your time, and try to get in as much detail as you can about the project. Look for construction "extras" such as unusual framing details, custom trim, or bay windows, and add them to the bid along with the more usual components such as foundations, framing and basic trim.

You may want to use the manual and go through, step by step, so you don't accidentally miss anything. It's a lot more fun to learn our construction estimating programs on a job you've already finished, rather than on a bid you have to get out by tomorrow!
