Stonework Repointing Cost

Construction ITEM DESCRIPTION

Construction estimating unit cost for removing old mortar and repointing joints in existing exterior stonework with fresh mortar.

Unit Size

One square foot.

Labor Costs

We figure about 20 square feet of pointing work per hour for a skilled mason with a half-time helper.

NOTE-- That's a helper spending 50% of his or her time mixing mortar and cleaning out joints, not a professional football player coming over to help between periods. If you are using the latter, figure about 80 to 100 square feet per home game (assuming that you're close to the stadium and traffic isn't too bad). ;-)

Material Costs

Mortar raw materials.

Suggested Quantity

Goldenseal suggests the exterior foundation wall area that is above grade (calculated from the foundation perimeter and the floor height above grade).

Source of Construction Pricing

Based on crew timing from several projects done by Turtle Creek Construction. This cost is for a complete repointing of all joints in local field stone foundations (usually shale, sometimes limestone) with an average stone size of approximately 2/3 square foot (about the size of a cinder block).

The cost will be higher if the stones are unusually small, and lower if the stones are unusually large.
