Walk in and No Name Customers

How do I handle walk-in customers when I don't know their name?

Goldenseal accounting software lists each Sale as coming from a Customer account, which works very well if you need to ship or deliver the item, if you will bill it later, or if you want to track cash sales for each customer. However, you can also use it for anonymous retail sales, by creating one or more Customer accounts for people you don't know, or for infrequent cash buyers that you want to combine into one account.

To set up an account for anonymous customers, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Customers from the Accounts menu.
  2. Click the New button.
  3. Type in "Unknown Name" or something similar as an account name.
  4. Turn on the Allow One-Time Names checkbox.
  5. Enter the usual sales tax rate and payment terms for walk-in customers.
  6. Click the Enter key to save the account.

To enter sales from customers that you don't know, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Sales from the Income menu.
  2. Click the New button.
  3. Enter your Unknown Name account into the Sold To field.
  4. If you want to identify the customer, type in a name or description under the Sold To field.
  5. Enter other details for the sale.
