VPN Setup-- Windows Server

Here's how to set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) on your server, using Windows XP and Windows Firewall:

Hardware Setup

Your server machine needs to have an Internet connection. Usually you'll do that via an Internet gateway, which may be a Cable Modem, DSL Modem or WiFi network connector.

NOTE-- A dial-up Internet connection is not sufficient for a VPN.

Connect your server machine to the Internet gateway with Ethernet cable, or set up a wireless network.

Your Local Area Network also needs to have a static IP address, so other computers can locate your server. This is a unique, 32-bit number that will be in the form of four numbers (for example, 155.30.110.43). Contact your Internet Service Provider to arrange a static IP address. Usually there is a monthly or annual fee for the address.

Goldenseal Server Setup

Every networking application uses a specific port number. The default port for Goldenseal is #18259 (or GS in ASCII characters). If you want to increase your security, click the link for instructions on switching to a different port number.

Firewall Setup

Set up your Internet firewall so it does not block the port you use for Goldenseal. Usually that is port #18259, but you can change it to a different port number to increase security.
