Excel Version Compatibility

Problem

which versions of Excel work on which Macintosh computer hardware and systems?
Compatibility, what is compatible with PPC PowerMac, System 7 8 9, MultiFinder when using our Macintosh construction software

Diagnosis

System 6-- XL 1.5 mem. problems w MultiFinder. XL 2.2 and later OK.
System 7-- XL 1.5 breaks. XL 2.2 and later are fine.
System 8.0 & 8.1— XL 2.2 breaks. XL3 and later are fine.
System 8.5 & 8.6— XL3 is fine. XL4 ??. XL5 OK. XL8 OK but buggy.
System 9— XL3 OK. XL4 breaks. XL5 OK (some problems?). XL98 OK.
System 9.1 and 9.2— XL3 runs OK but zaps some menus. XL4 breaks. XL5 menu problems?. XL98 ??
Mac OSX-- XL 3 to 98 break, even in Classic.

Solution

Quadra and other 040 Macs-- XL 1.5 and earlier will NOT run. XL 2.2 may have problems, however there's an XL 2.2a update that should work OK.
PPC PowerMacs-- XL 2.2 and earlier will NOT run. XL3 and XL4.0a work fine. XL5 is native, so it runs faster (however it's also buggier).
We consider XL3 to be the most reliable form of Excel, and that's what we use here. XL4 is much preferable to XL5. XL5 is better than XL8.

Excel 2000 and newer started to get more reliable again rather than less. However they are LESS reliable when using MacNail, since they are gradually having more problems with the older macro language that we used for MacNail.

Comments

MacNail and Excel 8— They will need to get special disks from us if upgrading to XL8, since some menu commands had to be moved. Cost $5 per disk.
Excel 8 seems to have some problems running older version macros (which is what MacNail is written in). Some users have done OK with it, but some have reported crashes for which we have no fix.
