Category Troubleshooting Guide

Problem

It's not showing construction categories in my Estimate. It's showing the wrong categories! It's not showing subcategories!

These guides all apply to the category and subcategory columns in Category and Item breakdown tables for Goldenseal construction estimating software.

Solution

First, check what type of transaction is having the problem. Then use the appropriate checklist below:

When categories are not "right" in Estimates:

  1. Click the More Info button, and check the Category System clairvoyant field. What's there?
  2. If blank, fill in a category system, and that will solve the problem.
  3. If it's the No Categories system, change it.
  4. If it's a "short" system and they want to see subcategories, change it to a "full" system.
  5. If that doesn't solve the problem, close the More Info window, and have them close the Estimate and then re-open the window (this may fix it if they have an older version).
  6. If that doesn't solve the problem, choose Category Setup from the Costs menu, choose Category Systems from the submenu, then double-click on the Category System in use.
  7. Is it showing categories?
  8. Click on the category they are using. Does it show subcategories?
  9. Does the problem happen only on printed forms? If so, open Options--Preferences--Interface, and adjust the Sort Category Names checkbox in the Estimating Display section.
  10. One of the steps above should solve it, but if not, then it's a mystery problem and we'll need to see the file. Explain how to send it.

When categories are not "right" in Material Purchases and other Cost Transactions:

  1. What do they have in the Job Class and Job fields?
  2. Open the job account (choose Project Account from the View menu if it's for a project. Choose Overhead Account if it's an overhead expense, etc).
  3. What's in the Category System field? For projects, click the More Info button to see it.
  4. If blank, fill in a category system, and that will solve the problem.
  5. If it's the "no categories" system, change it.
  6. If it's a "short" system and they want to see subcategories, change it to a "full" system.
  7. If that doesn't solve the problem, close the More Info window, and have them close the window and then re-open it (this may fix it if they have an older version).
  8. If that doesn't solve the problem, choose Category Setup from the Costs menu, choose Category Systems from the submenu, then double-click on the Category System in use.
  9. Is it showing categories?
  10. Click on the category they are using. Does it show subcategories?
  11. One of the steps above should solve it, but if not, then it's a mystery problem and we'll need to see the file. Explain how to send it.
