Estimating Room Additions

NOTE-- We retired the BidMagic construction estimating software in 2001. It has been replaced by Goldenseal construction estimating software.

We still include this BidMagic estimating software manual as a convenience for users of our older program. Many features are similar, in Goldenseal estimating.

Estimating Additions with some Interior Work

An addition project that also involves a great deal of work in the existing structure should be treated as a remodeling project (see page 170). You can then specify exactly what is happening in each new or existing room.

If only a little work is being done in the existing project, choose Addition as a project type, and add the work in the existing building to those dimensions that it affects. For example, if you are replacing 200 square feet of flooring materials in the existing building, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Addition as a project type on the first Dimensions card.
  2. Go through the next six Dimensions cards, and enter quantities for the addition only.
  3. On the Finish Dimensions card, enter most numbers for the new addition only.
  4. For gross finished floor area, lock the quantity so you can see the calculated quantity for new finished floor in the addition (Example 1).
  5. Unlock the quantity for gross finished floor area, and add the amount of additional flooring from the existing building (Example 2).

NOTE: Net finished floor area is also adjusted automatically whenever you change the gross finished floor area.
