Entering Labor Costs

In the MacNail construction accounting software, you'll enter labor costs in a way that is very similar to the checkbook ledger.

NOTE-- In 2000, MacNail was replaced by Goldenseal construction accounting software. Goldenseal is an integrated program that includes general accounting, job costing, payroll and project billing, plus estimating and other features. It includes Labor Hours records, which are similar to the MacNail Labor Log.

For example, the time card may show that on Feb 6, Allen spent 2 hours supervising excavation at the Matthews job, and 6 hours installing cabinets at the Smith job.

To enter this information:

1. Click the mouse in the job# column in the next blank row. Type in 4, the code number for Matthews. The name will be 'looked up' and displayed in the jobsite column as soon as you type Enter or move to the next cell.
2. Tab to the emp# column, and type in 2, which is the code for Allen. Press Enter, then look in the who ? column to make sure the name is correct.
3. Tab to the date column, and enter the date the work was done. In this case, we have already used Fill Down to put Feb 6 in several rows.
4. Tab to the item of work column, and enter a brief description of the type of work done-- supervise excav. Although this description is not needed by MacNail's job costing, it is helpful for your own use.
5. Tab to the hrs (hours) column, and type 2. Notice that when you hit Enter or leave this cell, Allen's wage rate and 'burden factor' are looked up, and a labor job cost is calculated in the total column.
7. Tab to the cat.(category) column, and type sup, the cost code for supervision.
8. Tab to the sub.(subcategory) column, and type 1. You only need a number here if you are tracking your costs with both categories and subcategories.
9. Choose *Jump to Next Line from the FORMAT menu, or type command-Z. This will take you to the first column of the next line.
10. Type in 11 as a job number for this next labor item.
11. Tab to the emp# column, and type command-quote (') to repeat the cell above it.
12. Type in hang cabinets under item of work, 6 under hrs, S under category, and 1 under subcategory.

NOTE: The construction cost codes used in MacNail Accounting correspond exactly to the codes used in MacNail Estimating. You can use either the 16 numbered CSI construction divisions, or MacNail's 30 letter divisions.
