Why does the Roof Eaves Total Length dimension subtract for gables?

To get the total length of eaves for a project, Goldenseal construction estimating software calculates the length of eaves for the main roof, and then adds the eaves from any dormers that penetrate the roof.

It also subtracts for the length of any "side" gables. Those are additional gables that are at right angles to the main set of gables. Because they cut into the eaves side of the roof, they reduce the total length of eaves.

HINT-- If a side gable does not reduce the length of the eaves, then consider it as a gable dormer instead!
