Changing the Currency Symbol

Problem

When run under newer versions of Mac OS, Goldenseal is not able to read the currency symbol from System Preferences, Language & Region.

Users may also want to reset the currency symbol temporarily: for example, when creating a single estimate or invoice using a different currency.

Workaround

Goldenseal 4.96 adds a temporary workaround to fix the problem. To set up a field where you can enter an alternate currency symbol, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Custom Layouts from the Options menu, and choose Lists from the submenu.
  2. Choose Preferences-- Interface from the List Type popup at upper left.
  3. Click on the field tool in the palette on the left side of the window (4th row left).
  4. Click in a blank part of the layout on the right, and drag a rectangle.
  5. You will see a list of unused fields. Scroll down and select Number Name 9000.
  6. Close the layout and save changes.

To change the currency symbol, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Preferences from the Options menu, and choose Interface from the submenu.
  2. Type the desired currency symbol into the Number Name 9000 field you added in the previous steps.
  3. Click OK.

HINT: In most Mac fonts, the pound £ symbol is option-3, the euro € symbol is option-shift-3, and the yen ¥ symbol is option-y. For other currencies, you can enter multiple characters if needed. In a few cases, you may need to use a local font that includes the desired currency symbol in the standard/extended ASCII alphabet.

Solution

Goldenseal Pro will support currency symbols from System Preferences, Language & Region. We also plan to add an easier interface for entering an alternate currency symbol. Goldenseal Pro will also support Unicode text, so a full range of currency symbols can be used.
