Faster Saves

Is there way to make saving faster when there are many records?

When Goldenseal accounting software saves a record, it does several things:

  • It posts the transactions to any accounts or other records affected by the change (and then also saves those records).
  • It updates one or more arrays which keep track of records, so menus will work faster.
  • It stores the current position of the record on your hard drive, and frees up wasted space.
  • It saves all changes to your hard drive.

For most transactions the saving process takes much less than a second. However it may take a few seconds in any of these cases:

  • When you have thousands or tens of thousands of records of the same type.
  • When the transaction includes hundreds of breakdown items.
  • When your hard drive is running slowly because of fragmentation, or because it is almost full.

In Goldenseal version 3.0 we found a way to shave one or two seconds off the time it takes to save a record when you have thousands or tens of thousands of records.

Other than that, you can do any of the following to help increase speed:

  • Make sure your hard disk has at least 10% free space.
  • Run a disk defragmentation program every few months.
  • Get a faster hard drive, or a faster computer.
